Camping at Happy Holidays Campground: A Relaxing Week in Cherokee, NC

If you’re looking for a serene and well-equipped campground in the heart of the Smoky Mountains, Happy Holidays Campground in Cherokee, NC, might just be your next perfect getaway. With the peaceful Soco Creek running right alongside our site, it offered an ideal balance between work and relaxation. Here’s a detailed rundown of our week-long stay at this beautiful campground, which turned out to be both a working retreat and a refreshing break.

Location & Setup

Our journey brought us to Spot 8 at Happy Holidays Campground, a premium back-in site with full hookups and a direct connection to Soco Creek. This location was a gem, with the soothing sounds of the creek just a few feet away, making it easy to unwind after a long day. With the Blue Ridge Parkway and Great Smoky Mountains nearby, it’s a prime spot for those looking to explore the area.

Arrival and Setup

We arrived on Sunday, after a scenic drive that could’ve offered a few challenges—especially if you’re navigating through Maggie’s Valley. We strongly recommend bypassing this route if you’re coming from Asheville or Charlotte; the winding roads can be tough on both driver and vehicle. Instead, take the slightly longer route to save yourself some stress.

Once we reached the campground, check-in was smooth. The staff was friendly and helpful, guiding us to our site and assisting with backing in. The campground roads are paved and easy to navigate, and our spot was spacious with a sturdy plastic picnic table ready for use.

Camping Experience

The week was split between work and leisure, with Shaun spending several workdays outside by the creek. The peaceful environment proved perfect for taking calls and getting tasks done. The creekside sites are a must if you enjoy the calming sound of rushing water—it’s an unbeatable backdrop.

Even though we didn’t engage in many campground-specific activities, we did enjoy several campfires, and the proximity to Harrah’s Cherokee Casino and the Blue Ridge Parkway provided plenty of opportunities for excursions. Shaun even managed to win a little cash at a late-night poker tournament at the casino—coming in 10th place out of over 300 entrants!

Amenities & Facilities

Happy Holidays Campground offers a range of amenities to ensure a comfortable stay. Most sites come with full hookups, and there are plenty of pull-through options, although we opted for a back-in spot near the creek. The campground features full bathrooms with showers, a laundry facility, a fishing pond, and even an on-site store that carries a decent selection of supplies, including a popular ice cream stand. Cabins and tent sites are also available for those without RVs.

While the Wi-Fi was intermittent and the speeds were low (around 2mbps download, less than 1mbps upload), our Starlink system worked flawlessly thanks to the clear skies above our site. Emily’s Verizon service was usable but not ideal for connectivity, while Shaun’s T-Mobile had no coverage. If you need reliable internet, be prepared to bring your own solution.

Weather & Environment

We lucked out with the weather. While a tropical storm wreaked havoc back home, Cherokee enjoyed clear skies with just 15 minutes of rain one night—enough to prompt a quick scramble to move our gear under the awning. The cool mountain air and the sound of the creek made for perfect sleeping conditions, and the campground’s overall atmosphere was tranquil and inviting.

Exploring Cherokee

During our stay, we ventured out to explore some local favorites. We started with a hearty breakfast at Peter’s Pancake House—a must-visit if you’re in town. The food was delicious, though be prepared for a wait during peak hours.

Later, we drove up to Clingman’s Dome, about 45 minutes away. The short but steep half-mile hike to the top was rewarded with stunning panoramic views of the Smoky Mountains.

Shaun also took his motorcycle for a scenic ride along the Blue Ridge Parkway, which offered some of the best views he’s ever experienced.

On Friday, Emily’s parents joined us and stayed in the cozy Beaver Cabin at the campground. We dined at Native Brews Tap & Grill that evening. While the meal was decent, the experience wasn’t remarkable, though Shaun did score a 6-pack of craft beer to-go.

Saturday’s dinner at Circle H Chophouse was the culinary highlight. We shared a perfectly cooked prime rib, complemented by tasty sides. The meal was excellent, the staff was friendly, and the prices were reasonable—definitely a spot to check out if you’re in Cherokee.

Final Thoughts

Happy Holidays Campground in Cherokee, NC, proved to be an excellent spot for both work and play. Whether you’re looking to explore the Smokies, try your luck at the nearby casino, or simply relax by a creek, this campground has something to offer. The friendly staff, well-maintained facilities, and scenic views make it a destination worth visiting.

If you plan to stay here, our biggest tip is to book a creekside spot. You’ll enjoy the sound of the water and the natural beauty surrounding you, making your stay even more memorable. Don’t forget to avoid Maggie’s Valley on your way in, and be sure to stock up on supplies before the store closes in the evening!
